Location of the archaeological site

El Alto Río Pinturas area is located in the Patagonian region, in the northwest of the Province of Santa Cruz, south of the Argentine Republic. Cueva de las Manos is located in the Cañadón del Río Pinturas -the watershed of the Deseado River- between the towns of Perito Moreno and Bajo Caracoles, and is accessed by the national route No. 40. 623 km from the city of El Calafate . The climate corresponds to that of a dry semi-desert region, with an annual average rainfall of 200 mm. The canyon acts as a means of protection, tempering considerably the severe climatic conditions towards the level of the river. The winds of the west that blow on the pampas and plateaus reduce their erosive effects, conserving thus the natural humidity of the valley. The average temperature in this area is 8º C, although it can reach

zar los -10º C.

Cañadón Formation:

Cañadon of the river Pinturas The Cañadón del Río Pinturas is located in the Northwest of the province of Santa Cruz, in the Macizo del Deseado. The erosive effect of the waters coming from the melting of the Pleistocene glaciers of the Posadas and Pueyrredón lakes, together with the lateral widening due to landslides, falls and landslides of rocks and soil on both banks of the river, generated the landscape that we contemplate today. The final result of this whole process is the canyon with walls of about 200 meters high over the course of the river. Currently, the canyon drains only the waters of the Buenos Aires Lake plateau.

Management of heritage in Cave of the hands

One of the first protective measures was to put protective bars in the main sectors to prevent direct contact of the public with the paintings (Turismo de la Nación 1980). The National Institute of Anthropology and Latin American Thought since 1995 begins to participate in the management and scientific advice of the site. From that moment on, a series of measures designed for the care and administration of the site are implemented in a management plan. A Management Plan is the set of measures to be implemented to achieve the public use of cultural resources with the objective of conserving them. The actions have been carried out gradually since then and are the following: Team of guides Presence of permanent staff at the site; Guided tours only by specialized personnel; Control of access for visitors with a limited number of people per group; Building and improvement of facilities for staff accommodation; Expansion of basic services for visitors;

  • Construcción de pasarelas, barandas y decks a lo largo del circuito de las pinturas;
